How to Pray Tahajjud Complete Step by Step

Tahajjud Prayer Time

  1. The first third of the night: around 20.30 to 23.00
  2. Second third night: around 23.00 to 1.30 in the morning
  3. Last third night: around 1.30 until dawn prayer time. This is the best time to pray tahajjud.

Step by Step How to Pray Tahajjud

In general, the procedure for praying tahajjud is the same as other prayers. The difference is, the tahajjud prayer is done with the condition that you sleep first. The following is the order of how to pray tahajjud:

  1. Preceded by sleep
  2. Tahajjud prayer intention.

اُصَلِّى سُنَّةً التَّهَجُّدِ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ ِللهِ تَعَالَى

“Ushallii sunnata-t-tahajjudi rak’ataini mustaqbilal qiblati lillahi ta’alla.”

It means: I intend to pray sunnah tahajjud 2 rakaat, facing the Qibla, for Allah ta’ala.

  1. Takbiratul Ihram followed by iftitah prayer

Takbiratul Ihram:

اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ

Allaahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)

Iftitah:

اللهُ اَكْبَرُ كَبِرًا وَالْحَمْدُ لِلهِ كَشِيْرًا وَسُبْحَانَ اللهِ بُكْرَةً وَاَصِيْلًا . اِنِّى وَجَّهْتُ وَجْهِيَ لِلَّذِيْ فَطَرَالسَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْااَرْضَ حَنِيْفًا مُسْلِمًا وَمَا اَنَا مِنَ الْمُشْرِكِيْنَ . اِنَّ صَلَاتِيْ وَنُسُكِيْ وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِيْ لِلهِ رَبِّ الْعَا لَمِيْنَ . لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَهُ وَبِذَ لِكَ اُمِرْتُ وَاَنَ مِنَ الْمُسْلِمِيْنَ .

Allaahu akbaru Kabiraa Walhamdulillaahi Katsiiraa, Wa Subhaanallaahi Bukratan Wa’ashiilaa, Innii Wajjahtu Wajhiya Lilladzii Fatharas Samaawaati Wal Ardha Haniifan Musliman Wamaa Anaa Minal Musyrikiin. Inna Shalaatii Wa Nusukii Wa Mahyaaya Wa Mamaatii Lillaahi Rabbil ‘Aalamiina. Laa Syariikalahu Wa Bidzaalika Umirtu Wa Ana Minal Muslimiin.

It means:

Allah is Great in the greatest way, all praise be to Allah with much praise. Glory be to Allah in the morning and evening. Verily, I turn my face to Allah, Who created the heavens and the earth in obedience or in submission, and I am not of those who associate partners with Him.

التَّحِيَّاتُ الْمُبَارَكَاتُ الصَّلَوَاتُ الطَّيِّبَاتُ لِلَّهِ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْكَ أَيُّهَا النَّبِىُّ وَرَحْمَةُ اللَّهِ وَبَرَكَاتُهُ السَّلاَمُ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى عِبَادِ اللَّهِ الصَّالِحِينَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ اللَّهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ أَللهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَعَلَى آلِ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا صَلَّيْتَ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَعَلَى آلِ سَيِّدِنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وبَارِكْ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ ، وَعَلَى آلِ سَيِّدِنَا مُحَمَّدٍ ، كَمَا بَارَكْتَ عَلَى سَيِّدِنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَعَلَى آلِ سَيِّدِنَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، إِنَّكَ حَمِيدٌ مَجِيدٌ

“At-tahiyyaatu al-mubaarakaatu al-shalawaatu al-thoyyibaatu lillahi. Assalaamu ‘alaika ayyuhannabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuhu. As-Salaamu ‘alainaa wa ‘alaa ‘ibaadillahi as-shoolihin. Asyhadu an laa ilaaha illa Allah wa Asyhadu anna muhammadarrasuulullah. Allahumma Sholli ‘ala Sayyidinaa Muhammad. Wa ‘ala aali sayyidina Muhammad, Kamaa shollayta ‘ala sayyidina Ibrahim. Wa ‘ala aali sayyidina Ibrahim. Wa Baarik ‘ala sayyidina Muhammad wa ‘ala aali sayyidina Muhammad. Kamaa baarakta ‘ala sayyidinaa Ibrahim, wa ‘ala sayyidina Ibrahim, innaka hamiidun majiid.”

It means:

  1. Read Salam

اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَرَحْمَةُ اللهِ وَبَرَكَا تُهُ
