GIMP: Make Background Transparent

I titled this article GIMP: Make Background Transparent. I will explain step by step how to make the image transparent. In the previous article, I have written about Blur Something in a Picture. Making the background transparent is the same as removing the background in the image. I will explain three ways to make a transparent background in GIMP. Three ways are: select by color tool, fuzzy select tool, and free select tool.

I use the Gimp software version 2.10.12. GIMP software is a free image editing software. You can install it on your computer easily. but, even if it’s free, this software can do the editing well. When you make a WhatsApp sticker, you need a transparent image.

Step on How to Make Background Transparent

Follow the steps below:

Select by Color Tool

This tool will select all the colors we want. For example, I will delete the white color on the sign. The picture below is the final result.

  1. Open your image.
  2. Add an Alpha Channel to your image.
    1. Click the Layer menu.
    2. Click the Transparency sub-menu.
    3. Add Alpha Channel.
  3. Click the Select by Color Tool icon.

  1. Click the color you want to delete. I gave an example of removing white color. After that, all-white colors will be selected.
  2. Then you press the delete key on the keyboard.
  3. Now export the transparent image to the PNG file.
    1. Click File on the menu.
    2. Click Export As…(Or Press Shift + CTRL + E)
    3. Don’t forget to choose the extension type. Click Select File Type (By Extension) in the lower right corner.
    4. Type the name and press the Export button.
    5. You click the Export button again in the Export Image as a PNG window.
  4. Done.

I use this method to delete the same color in one area. The picture below is the final result.

  1. Open your image.
  2. Add an Alpha Channel to your image.
    1. Click the Layer menu.
    2. Click the Transparency sub-menu.
    3. Add Alpha Channel.
  3. Click the Fuzzy Select Tool icon.

  1. Click the color you want to delete. I gave an example of removing white color. After that, white colors will be selected only in one area. Then you press the delete key on the keyboard. Please see the picture below.

  1. Repeat step number four to clear the other corner.
  2. Then, you export the file, follow step number 6 above.

GIMP: Make Background Transparent by Using Free Select Tool

I use the Free Select Tool to delete the background image that is irregular. That is, the colors vary. Unlike the two previous selection tools, it is free as we like.

  1. Open your image.
  2. Add an Alpha Channel to your image. For detail see step above.
  3. Click the Free Select Tool icon.

  1. Then click each edge of your image. You can see the video that I showed above. You can Subscribe to my YouTube channel.
  2. Then invert the selection.
    1. Click the Select menu.
    2. Click Invert sub-menu.
  3. Then press the Delete button on the keyboard.
  4. Done.
